What is the meaning of 'kolonist'?

Hello from Canada;

I have been reading a microfilm from the Mormon Church for the village
of Grunau in Kreis Flatow. The tape has births, marriages and deaths
from the years 1830 to 1859. In the birth records, the word 'kolonist'
appears after the name of the father. Can someone explain what this
means both practically and historically?

It's a colonialist, e.g., an immigrant that settles as farmer on "new"
land.
