Westphalia

In the 1830's what area was called Westphalia? I am tryng to track and ancestor, I read Hamburg, Westphalia, family lore says Munich area, boy am I confused. Thanks

     Here's a map of central Europe from 1815-1866 and you will see
Westphalia south of Hannover, bordering the Netherlands:

  I don't find a Hamburg in Westphalia. Hamburg is/was a state in itself (I
think) and a major port. Perhaps your ancestor sailed from Hamburg to the
USA--if he/she was an emigrant. There is a Westphalia in New York. Munich
is in Bavaria (also a separate state or kingdom at one time). Bavaria is the
southeastern part of Germany, bordering Austria and the Czech Republic.
