Hi Bill,Don't be so sure! I would have said the same thing about my family. My sister had a small note with some information. After digging I found out who it referred to (my great-uncle.) I sent for his death certificate. It listed his place of birth as Australia. I was sure that someone must not have known how to spell Austria. Since I was sure my family was all German I supposed that being musicians he was born on some "tour."Never the less, I posted a query on the AU list about citizenship. A kind soul looked in the indices for Victoria. Not only was he born there, his older brother was born and died there. I also found my great-great-grandparents (who were born in Germany) married there. Within two years the next brother was born back in Germany. Then came my great-grandfather and younger sister before emigrating and staying in the U.S.BobbiP.S. Their name was very common all over Germany also. --- On Thu 08/24, < WBL435@aol.com > wrote:From:

As you may know the name Wendt is as common in Germany as Smith and Jones are here in the States. I know my Wendts only came to America although there may have had relatives that went to other places. My grandfather Wendt and his wife were deceased when I was born in 1935 so I never met them. All I know is that supposedly they came to America in the mid 1800s from Hannover. However I can find no record of them in that city so feel that it was the Kingdom of Hannoverand not the city. Maybe one day I will luck out. Take care.Bill Leichter______________________________________________
Yes this is very true as people did travel around more than we think they did "way back then".
What names do you have in your Wendt Tree Bill please, i will see if I can match any names with other Wendts that i may have!! One never knows who we may find .
I have a data base on many germans who arrived in Ceylon now Sri Lanka if anyone is interersted in looking up Germans in Ceylon.
I have names like Hoffman, Ludovici, Koch, Andree, Arndt, Albrecht, Altendorff, Ohlmus, Oorloff,Andrea, Andriesz,Barsenbach,Bekker,Brechman,Busselman,Conderlag, Deutrom,Douwe, and very many more (this is a small sample) the lists gets added to weekly. There were many Germans who went to Ceylon and many of those have the same surnames as those who went to the USA for Example Koch(some now called Cook and Cooke) and Albrecht (now Albright etc )
