Jens (Plawer)

Dear Jens:
Although I can read German with ease, it is hard work to write German and
the results are not too grammatical. I think you and Tanja, like so many
Germans, will be able to read my English. If not, please let me know and I
will do the translation. If you have any questions, you may write in German
and I will be able to understand.

1.) Alter: 70
2.) Geschlecht: Male
3.) Wann haben Sie angefangen, sich mit der Ahnenforschung zu beschftigen
(Alter / Jahr)? 60/1994
4.) Was war der Anlass? My daughter wanted to identify people in old
photos she had inherited from my mother. I thought she might also find a
family genealogy, written 30 years earlier by deceased relatives we had
never met, of interest. I decided to make a database of the 800 individuals
in the report. It was necessary to purchase software to do so economically.
In doing so, I learned that my fathers side of the family included a signer
of the American Declaration of Independence of 1776, John Hart. Once I
completed the capture of the information, history and genealogy for the 800
individuals, I decided to capture the genealogy and history of other family
branches and began a process that has led to my data base, today, of over
42,000 individuals.
5.) Sind Sie Mitglied in einem genealogischen Verein? No.
6.) Suchen Sie regelmigen Kontakt zu anderen Familienforschern?
Wenn ja, in welcher Form findet der Austausch statt (Vereinstreffen
Chat etc.)? Yes, but with decreasing frequency as I get older. I have
written letters and e-mails to relatives asking for information and to
people with the names of relatives who live in the same area.
My daughter and I have also made contact by identifying sources on the
internet. Sometimes people see our family information on the internet and
contact us.
Having started to compile family history and genealogy caused me to again
start to go to family reunions after 40 years of missing them. Our family
branches of German descendants have had reunions every year for about 90
years. This gave me a renewed sense of family.
7.) Aus welchen Motiven betreiben Sie heute Ahnenforschung? I want to
leave a body of family history and genealogy for all coming generations of
the families in my database which I will pass on to my daughter and will
hope she will pass it on to another descendant.
8.) Spielt der Aspekt der Nostalgie fr Sie bei dieser Freizeitbeschftigung
eine bedeutende Rolle? Wenn ja, inwiefern? It is hard, maybe impossible to
understand how to know if nostalgia has been part of my motivation. But, I
think the answer would be no, with regard longing to capture my own past. I
think my motive was a burning desire to know more about my ancestors. I
enjoyed visiting Fehmarn Island and visiting the Gasthaus once owned by my
great-great-grandfather.
