Wehrkamp

Hello, List Members,

Some of you on the list, notably Wilfried Peterson, helped a woman named Diana Wright who was researching the same family name as mine. Unfortunately, Diana passed away early this year. She was researching a Joseph Wehrkamp whom I think may have been a brother of my Johann Wehrkamp as both of them were in the same household in the 1850 census. I have copied one of Diana's last emails below. Can anyone tell me how she was able to get the birth document of Juergen Henrich Wehrkamp? I would like to get any church record that might list the children of Jobst Rosemann called Wehrkamp. Can anyone explain why Rosemann would be called Wehrkamp? Is the town or village of Natrup near a place called Dissen? Also, did anyone help her translate the document that gave Juergen Henrich Wehrkamp permission to leave Hilter, Germany in 1836? I also think the two "brothers" immigrated together - first to Ohio, then to Iowa. I have not done any work at all with records or researchers overseas and I truly don't know how to get started. I don't speak German. I would be very grateful for any information or suggestions.
Thank you very much.
Carole - California

(Diana's listing) Hello everyone,

Thanks to Wilfried Petersen and everyone else who helped me with the birth document of
my Great Great Great Grandfather Juergen Henrich Wehrkamp born in 1811 in Natrup,
Osnabruck, Hannover, Prussia. His father was Jobst Rosemann called Wehrkamp born abt
1777. His mother was Catharina Elisabeth Luecke born abt 1767. I would love to hear
from anyone working on these lines. Or if anyone knows where to look for any
information on these families, any help would be great. I do know the Jobst was the
leaseholder in the village of Natrup at the time of Juergen's birth.

And I just received the document that gave Juergen Henrich Wehrkamp permission to
leave Hilter, Germany in 1836. I can't read German, so if anyone is willing to
translate it for me. I can e-mail you a copy of the document. Thank you.

Thank you,

Diana

Hi Carole,

I think I know how Diana got the permission papers. I'm quite sure I
worked with her on that project. In the Osnabrück archives, it lists the
following Wehrkamps who emigrated from Germany:

Wehrkamp, Adolf Ludwig Friedrich 12160
Wehrkamp, Adolph Ludwig Friedrich 12161
Wehrkamp, Adolph Ludwig Friedrich 12162
Wehrkamp, Clamor 12162
Wehrkamp, Clamor Ludwig 15085
Wehrkamp, Friedrich Louis Hermann 12163
Wehrkamp, Friedrich Ludwig Hermann 12164
Wehrkamp, Friedrich Rudolph 2288
Wehrkamp, Johann Heinrich 15086
Wehrkamp, Jürgen Heinrich 15087
Wehrkamp, Louis Eduard 24193
Wehrkamp, männl. 12164
Wehrkamp, männl. 12165
Wehrkamp, männl. 15089
Wehrkamp, männl. 2288
Wehrkamp, männl. 24193
Wehrkamp, männl. + weibl. 12160
Wehrkamp, Maria Christine Wilhelmine 15088
Wehrkamp, Marie 15089
Wehrkamp, Wilhelm 12165
Wehrkamp, Wilhelm Clamor Ludwig 15089
Wehrkamp, Wilhemina 15090

Those records can be obtained by emailing the archives in Osnabrück.
(E-Mail: poststelle@staatsarchiv-os.niedersachsen.de) The archives webpage
is:
    http://app.staatsarchive.niedersachsen.de/findbuch/ It's a little hard
to work with, but I think I have the information here for you:

You can see the code at the end of both Johann Hienrich and Jürgen
Heinrich is very close to one another. Furthermore when you click on that
number 15086 (Johann) you come up with:
Bestell-Nr.: Staatsarchiv Osnabrück, Rep 350 Ibg Nr. 7897f vgl. Nr. 7866
and for 15087 (Jürgen) you get:
Bestell-Nr.: Staatsarchiv Osnabrück, Rep 350 Ibg Nr. 7897 e vgl.Nr. 7864

You can request the records by using that code. Both of those codes point
to Hilter and yes, Hilter is not far from Natrup and both are just north of
Dissen. Most likely the people from Natrup went to church in Hilter.

I'm not sure I would bother to obtain those emigration papers. It is quite
obvious that the two men would have been relatives. Have you looked at the
LDS church records for Hilter?:
Kirchenbuchduplikat, 1808-1874 Evangelische Kirche Hilter (Kr. Iburg)

Have fun!
Barbara

Hi Carole & Barbara,
I hate to butt in on this info, but how did you get the names from the
Osnabruck archives??? I've been beating my head against the wall for some
time trying to locate ancestors :frowning:
Thanks!!
Debbie

Hi Debbie,
Who are you looking for? Searching the Osnabrück, Hannover,
Wolfenbüttel emigration records is done by going to the website:

   http://app.staatsarchive.niedersachsen.de/findbuch/

It is a little confusing to use, especially if you don't know German. On
the first page:
Choose one of the three locations on the bar & click Abschicken
Go to Index in the middle of the page and click
Fill in the surname you are looking for in the box "Suchbegriff"
Choose Personen where it says nach Ort
Click on Suchen starten and you will get a list of persons who emigrated
from Germany with that name. Or you may get nothing! Try all the same
search on all 3 locations.
Note the number on the right column. That number will direct you to the
town later. Click on a name that matches a person you are looking for and
you will get a code that will be what you use to order the record.
Finding what area the person comes from is not easy. On the Hannover
site, it names a town right in the code. For Osnabrück it is harder. Go
back to the page where you first clicked on Index and this time click on
Gliederung.
There you will see a list of towns and if you click on the numbers on
the left, you will get a list of all the people from that area. The numbers
start with 1 and go up from there. So if the number is 5 digits it will be
closer to the bottom of the list. But you have to go to the one that has
the number in it from the right column of the page with the list of names.
When you find the right one, the code will match the code you saw earlier
tied to the name you were looking for. I know this is confusing. I have
explained the process many times on this site and it never is very clear!
Then, you can order the records from one of the 3 locations. The email
addresses are:
  Hannover - poststelle@staatsarchiv-h.niedersachsen.de
  Osnabrück - poststelle@staatsarchiv-os.niedersachsen.de
  Wolfenbüttel - poststelle@staatsarchiv-wf.niedersachsen.de

You have to realize that these emigration records cover only certain
years--and not everybody is listed there. None of my relatives are. You're
lucky if you find them!!
If you still have trouble, let me know personally and I will try to
help. Several people on the list have explained that the ordering process
is fairly easy. They will send you the records by regular mail and then
you send the money ( I think even a check will do.) I haven't done that
part.

Barbara

Hi Barbara,

I am looking for 4 Robben brothers, 3 of which emigrated in the late 40's or
early 50's. One of them I'm not sure when he came but it may of been the
same time. All of them only listed their place of birth as Hannover or
Prussia in the US. I have no specifics at all! None of the church records
here have been helpful in the precise location either. I'm actually headed
out for a day trip to do genealogy research, but will study your
instructions when I get back. Thank you for taking the time to help me. I
appreciate it greatly!!
Debbie

I would greatly appreciate a look-up in the book "German Immigrants - Lists
of Passengers Bound from Bremen to New York" by Zimmerman & Wolfert from
someone who may have access to the book for the following years:

1855-1862 COHRS, Anna Catherina Dorothea and COHRS, Heinrich Friedrich
Both immigrated April 1857
Which ship?

1863-1867 COHRS, Cord Peter Jasper Cohrs
Immigrated May 1865
Which ship?

All were born in Oerbke, Hannover. Other Cohrs would also be welcome.

I have the volume for 1847-1854 and would be happy to check for names.

Thank you very much.

Linda Pauling

From the "Auswanderer Landkreis Uelzen", I found these COHRS emigrants.

I hope this helps.

In my own research, I have Catharine Dorthee COHRS who married Friedrich
Christoph HILMER about 1874 in Boeddenstedt (her residence), he was from
Hoeldenstedt, both in what is now Niedersachsen. They were both in 1850 in
case you know anything about them.

Thank you so very much, Bonita, for sending all of the COHRS information. I
do appreciate your help.

I am searching Cohrs in the U.S. for a gentleman who lives in Germany and is
not on the computer. I will send him your information to see if he knows any
of your COHRS family.

Where in the US did they settle? His Cohrs settled first in Bloom Twp.,
Illinois, south of Chicago. Anna Cath. Dor. married Heinrich Christoph Meyer
in 1860. Heinrich Friedrich died in 1865. Cord Peter migrated to Kansas and
from there to Oklahoma.

Linda

This couple is not actually my line, I actually capture all HILLMER or
HILMER I find in USA, Germany, UK, Australia, Canada, etc. They all seem to
meet back in Germany. I am descended from both a HILMER and HILLMER (as
well as MEYER, VOGTS and numerous others) from what is now Kreis Uelzen.

Catharine Dorothee COHRS b: 22 Sep 1850 in Boeddenstedt and married about
1874 to Friedrich Christoph HILMER s/o Heinrich Christoph HILMER of Hansen
and Catharine Marie BURING of Kl. Sustedt, Germany. In 1884 they emigrated
to 'Amerika'.

My Henrich Christoph HILLMER came to America via New York City and Chicago
in 1863 and by 1870 were in Iowa where they lived the remainder of their
life.
