Wedding age?

Hallo

I have been looking at films. What age does a man in Prussia need to be to get married?
The reason I ask is that some of the marriages has the fathers of the groom on the wedding
records. Then in in front of his name it says teen or young person.

Thank You

Hallo David,

it depends. There were probably no steady rules. I have found brides who have married with 17 and bridegrooms, who has already married with 18.

As a rule the husbands have married (if they not must) if they had their own living, thus between 30 and 40 years. The wives were mostly 10 years younger

What do You mean with "Then in in front of his name it says teen or young person"? Do You have a (German) example?

Best wishes
Frank

Dear David,

in the "glorious" days of the "Kaiser" men had normally been allowed to be
married at the age of 21 and woman at the age of 16, so I´am told.

Best wishes from the Hansestadt Lübeck

It's normal for the father of the groom to be mentioned in marriage
records. The groom is sometimes referred to as a "Jngling" (young
man, bachelor) to indicate that he was not married before. I haven't
seen so far any men in East Prussian records having married before the
   age of 18.

Hallo David,

I also think there hadn't been any steady rules. Having worked
through the Czarnikau marriage register (Protestant church) /
Posen between 1834 and 1856, I found lots of brides being
16 or 17 years old.

I even found *5* examples, where the bride was only *15* years
of age. What they needed to have - I think - was their parents'
consent (either their father's or mother's or both) and they had
to be confirmed (i.e. introduction into the adult world / fully
accepted by the church with its tasks and responsibilities).

Though their husbands normally were older than 20 - I think there
only was 1 example where the groom was only 19 years old.
Generally, they had to be able to support a family and (as far
as I know) they had to have served in the military, so their
wedding age was normally about 23 or 24 and older.
