Von Bülow Regiment

Rachel: FYI: The von Blow regiment was founded in Celle after the Thirty Years War (1650's) when Braunschweig-Lneburg and Hannover started the first standing army in Germany (perhaps all of Europe). Freiherr/General von Blow was high up in the government of Celle, advisor to the Duke. When the gov't was moved to Hannover, the regiment became a part of the Hannoverian army. A point of interest, von Blow was the only one of five judges who voted against the exile of the Princess Sophie Dorothea to Ahlden. I have one ancestor who served in that regiment in the early 1700s under the famous Duke of Marlborough. In the 1770s it was not part of the Prussian army, but that of Hannover. Prussia did not enter the picture until after 1866 when she conquered Hannover. Whether the regiment in toto was transferred to the Prussian army at that time, I do not know, altho I doubt it. However, much later there were a couple of von Blow officers (descendants of the above General
) who served in the Prussian army. This would have been in the 19th Cent. Hope this helps clarify for you. Jane
PS: Always remember, when emigrants in the 19th cent. said they came from Prussia, they had to say that since Prussia had conquered everything. But their forebears could have come from Hannover - or any other German state.
