Voges

I would appreciate any help with the background of my great grand father, Johann[es]/Johanna Bernhard[t] Voges. I know very little about him, except that he was born around 1859 in Hannover (I don't know if this was the city or the area). The information I do have was gained from Alan Rackemann from Melbourne.
Johannes Bernhardt Voges and Sophie Wilhelmine Rackemann were married in Germany and were part of the immigration to Australia with Sophie's parents, Heinrich Georg Rackemann and Johanna Carolina Eleanore Dreyer, and her brothers in 1884, travelling on the Merkara (which travelled from London to Moreton Bay, now Brisbane). Rev Carl Gottfried Hellmuth, who was the pastor to the Lutheran congregation at Maryborough, Queensland, supported the family.
Johannes and his family lived in Woodgate near Bundaberg, Queensland. Johannes apparently disappeared sometime after 1897, leaving Sophie and the family. Two stories were told within the Voges family; one that he was drowned in a fishing boat accident somewhere off Cairns, Queensland, and the other that he returned to Germany.
I would appreciate hearing from anyone has any information about Johannes Voges in their databases or any suggestions as to how to trace his fate. Any more general information about the surname itself would also be gratefully received.
