Thank you to Linda Marker for telling me about the Oldenburg-l list and
suggesting I join. I am hoping you can help me with my research.
My third great grandfather was H. Henry Uphaus/Uphouse who was naturalized
in Somerset County, PA, USA in 1845. I have been unable to find any
document that specifies where in Germany he was born – all censuses, as well
as his petition for naturalization, state “Germany” for place of birth (born
about November 1805). However, I did find on a passenger list a “Herm Henry
Uphaus” sailing 19 May, 1834 from Bremen to Baltimore, MD, USA. Residence
was listed as Damme. On this same ship were families with the same surnames
as those who settled in the area where my Henry resided in Middlecreek,
Somerset county, PA – Krieger/Kreger (residence Nellinghof), Moormann
(residence Aue? Hard to read. ), and Schnaedhurst/Schneidhorst (Aue). I
believe the Schneithorsts may be related to the Uphaus' as they are living
together in certain censuses in the U.S. The pieces all fit, and I’m
feeling more confident this might be my Henry, but have no proof.
Another piece to my puzzle is John Frederick Uphouse, who also lived in
Milford/Middlecreek, Somerset county, PA. He naturalized in 1841, was the
executor of Henry’s estate, and guardian of Henry’s six children when Henry
died in 1857 (Milford, Somerset county, PA). John “Frederick” has
consistently listed his place of birth as Hanover, Germany (1812) –
censuses, naturalization, death register – all documents I can locate. His
parents are listed as Herman and Minnie Uphouse on the death register.
I am hoping that I can find more information on Henry and Frederick and
determine their relationship, as well as town of origin in Germany. Any
ideas on where I should next look? Hoping someone may already be working on
these families or have info on them. Thank you all, and I look forward to
