Unknown birth location

Hello,
I have been searching locally (USA-KY) for 2 years trying to locate an exact birth location, parents and siblings for my ROBBEN family. I don't have much to go on but the listing of Hannover only. Here is the only information I have:

1. Bernard Robben born abt. 1817
2. John Herman Robben born March 1825
3. John Heinrich Robben born November 5, 1829
4. George Robben born abt. 1831

I believe the above are all brothers. They emigrated in the mid to late 1850's. John Herman married in Louisville, KY in 1854. On all of their documents it only states origination as Hannover or Prussia. They were all of the Catholic faith, of which 1 decendant was a Catholic priest locally. George Robben owned a chair manufacturing company. There may of been other siblings to emigrate also, but at this time, I am unaware of it. Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated!!
Thank you,
Debbie Robben

The emigration book of former "Kreise Lingen" now Emsland, listed some Robbe.
This could be yours:

Bernard D. Robben from Sommeringen/Plantlünne, no married, Weber (weaver), emigrated 1851
Johann Hermann from Sommeringen/Plantlünne, no married, Ackerknecht (farm hand), emigrated 1851
J. G. Robben from Gleesen, Knecht (farm hand), emigrated 1849

I believe catholic parish Emsbühren.

There is also an address:

Robben, Heinrich
  Heitel 15
  48480 Lünne

I hope it help,
Werner

Werner,
Thank you so much for the information!!! However, now I don't know what to
do with it? The address you have given, is that someone who is currently
living in Germany? I'm sorry for all of the questions, but I am not
familiar with the procedures.
Thank you,
Debbie

I found this address in the german phone directory, this is a current real postal address:

  Heinrich Robben
  Heitel 15
  48480 Lünne
  Germany

Maybe a relative?! You should write to him in english.
Plantenlünne is a part of the small town Lünne (you can write Luenne), close to the parish Emsbühren.

For your resarch you should check the LDS films of the Kirchengemeinde (parish) Emsbühren.

Werner

Debbie,
You may be happy to know there is a database of Emsburen families that
lists many Robben names. I think it may be of great help to you. Here it
is:

http://db.genealogy.net/ofb/namelist.php?nachname=ROBBEN&ofb=emsbueren

If that doesn't come right through with the Robben names, use this and
choose the R's.

http://db.genealogy.net/ofb/famlist.php?ofb=emsbueren&b=A

Also, the LDS have some microfilm of church records from Emsburen
(although not all) that you may find helpful. Do you live near a Mormon
center?

Good luck!
Barbara Stewart

Barbara,
Thank you so much for the info! I did check the list, a lot of same first
names, but the dates don't fit. I do live by a Mormon center, but still
don't know exactly what I'm looking for.
Thanks!
Debbie

Debbie,

There are Robbens everywhere in the part of Hannover called Emsland.
That area is along the Ems River on the border with the Netherlands. Be sure
to look at this website:
          www.emslanders.com
There are Robbens listed there as well as many other items of interest.
Maps--links to other sites, etc. You will learn a lot about that area of
Hannover.

I thought sure that Emsburen would be the place. It still could be, but
the more I search for Robbens, the more I find! It may be quite a task to
pin down the right town. I feel sure that they are from that area because
they are Catholic and that area of Hannover (Emsland) was a very Catholic
area. Most of the rest of Hannover was Lutheran. There are enough
indications that your people were from that area: all the Robbens that were
listed in the emigrant database (email from Bill Krems) were from towns in
the Emsland and there is the online database from Emsburen listing Robbens.
Rootsweb family trees for Robben lists many from the Emsland area. I have
all the records from a town called Wesuwe on my computer and there are MANY
Robbens in that town and nearby towns alone. I will try to look more
carefully, but I have not found the specific names of your ancestors
matching the birthdates you give. When we went to Germany and did research
at the Osnabrück diocese, I found that my great-grandmother's birthdate on
her tombstone was completely wrong from her actual birth in the church
records. So - allow for some different dates as you find names!

The Osnabrück diocese has not allowed their records to be filmed by the
LDS for the most part. I have been there doing research. That is a great
way to find data yourself. However, you may want to look up whatever films
may be available at the LDS center where you have seen evidence that Robbens
lived and order those.

That may be a big task. If you don't want to look at the LDS records,
another option is to contact the diocesan center in Meppen where there are
people who will do the research for you for a fee:

     http://www.kgverband-meppen.de/familienforschung.html

That site is in German, but if you use an online translator you may be able
to read it. At any rate, you can write an email to the address on that page
and they will do the research for you at 16 Euros per hour. I thought it
was 19E, but that is what the website says. Some people on this list have
done that and have been pleased with the results.

Have you checked the Catholic church records in the USA? Sometimes,
they actually have the birthplace listed--naturalization records, ship
lists, etc.

Actually, the information from Werner Holkamp looks as though it could be
the clue you need. Sommeringen is near Lingen. The LDS have some Catholic
church records for Lingen, but only after 1854.

Lots of luck and patience!

Barbara
