Unkenholz

Friends and list members --
I'm hoping that someone in Lower Saxony can help me. My
great-great-grandfather, Friedrich Wilhelm Unkenholz, was born about 1796, in the kingdom of
Hannover according to family tradition. His wife was Anna Christina Schultzing,
born about 1800. They came to the U.S. in 1848 with 11 children and settled in
New York state. Their place of origin was listed as Wetzens, Friesland, but I
have checked the vital records for that area through LDS and have found no
Unkenholzes. Family tradition was that they came from a place called Statheim, in
Hannover. I can't find any such place in an atlas of Lower Saxony.

The names of the children, in their English translations, are as follows:
Henry, Albert, Catherine, Wilhelmina, John William, Johanna, Dianna, John,
Gertrude, Frederick, and Jane. Henry, the oldest, was born about 1824, Jane about
1844.

There are Unkenholz families in Meppen and Bawinkel, but they have no
family records before about 1850. Where could I look for the name UNKENHOLZ in
earlier records? And does anyone know of any place called STATHEIM?

I read German fairly well and can handle a response in that language. But I
write it very poorly.

  Thanks for any help --

Hello Rik,
Unkenholz and Schultzing are unusual names to find. I haven't been
very successful in finding any clues on the internet. Were your people
Catholic? If they were, Meppen and other towns in the Emsland may be where
they came from. I am curious as to why you would be looking in the
Netherlands. Are there different places of origin mentioned in various
records?
What about the name of Stöckheim? Or Stockheim?
You could try to contact any of these names with email addresses. You
have nothing to lose--

Hello again,

There are some Unkenholz listed in the Ortsfamilienbucher for Wilsum.
Go here:

Click on Unkenholz. It shows Frederik Wilhelm Unkenholz (with no dates
given) married to Anna Cristina Elisabeth Scholte. The children's
birthdates would fit the children's dates you have. You can decide if the
names fit.

Wilsum is south of Emlichbeim, southeast of Twist - very near the
Netherlands border. Perhaps the Wilsum is the same as your Wetzens?

Barbara

I made a mistake--Wilsum is southwest of Twist, not southeast.
I'm sorry--
Barbara
