Umlaut

To everyone on the list who has tried to help with the Umlaut problem: Thanks but none of it works. I have no problem writing umlauts but I cannot receive them. I've tried every single method you have suggested and they still come out looking like weird Cyrillic or some such. This is on incoming Email - not outgoing. I found out that if I pretend to reply to a msg, surprisingly they come out right, but on the original msg they are just those strange characters. Which of you computer gurus can help me solve this problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Jane

Why Wait? Move to EarthLink.

Not knowing what email program you are using, (I use Agent) check the setting
for languages. Mine is set for US-ASCII and a code page for european letters.
YMMV.

take care

Hi to the character chasers:

I was thinking about Jane's problem. I knew generally what the problem was, but did not go any futher to check it out.

When I saw Liz's e-mail, I realized she is correct. Every
type of e-mail has to have at least one receiving
character set. Most have several. I use web mail and have 40.

Most e-mail services have a button entitled "options"
"formats" "etc". If you click on them and brouse
through them, you will probably find one which refers to
"character set". If you follow the instructions, you
should be able to change your set to one which suits your
needs.

Since you are using EarthLink as your provider, there may be another EarthLink provider out there who can give you specific instructions.

Once again, I believe Liz is correct. I don't think that it may be one of several problems. I belive that it is just a matter of using the right character set. If you don't know which one to select, "Default" is usually a good selection.
