I never simply accept anything at face-value, even when some does provide provenance... I always endevour to review their source for myself... But, I do applaud the efforts you make to authenticate your work and concurr with what you say about many of the so-called genealogists propogating incorrect data. Just because someone else has it in their tree online or a connection is published in a book does not make it true. The confusion surrounding my 5grGF's family is a case in point... even the DAR has the wrong family members published in an early volume. Personally, I look at other people's work, substantiated or not, as a clue to - not the conclusion of - my work.
