Translation?

Listers:

I show the following after 1845 birth information (and prior to baptismal) in Hannover: It reads (in Heggemann's Back s) I show this translates to "in Heggemann's cheeks". Any ideas?

Thanks

Ideas a lot. 1. short for "Backstube" = bakery working room, 2. short from
"Backsteinhaus" = brickstonehouse, 3. misreading out of "Busch" = little wood.
You will get it better from the context. Are there similar entries within other
entries. Often found that before the entry was given a special place name to make
clear from which part of the parish the new born was from. Sometimes even places
of simply one family but offside the rest off the parish are given by a
local landscape name. But as I said in the beginning, nothing more but ideas.

Best wishes for christmas and the new year Hans Peter Albers

I think it schould be "in Heggemann's Backhaus", says: the lived in the Bakehouse. The greater farms had former an small house for the own backery. Sometimes lived ther the tenant farmers.

There may be more to this then it shows. Were the people
Heuerleute? If so, I would suggest it stands for Heggemans
Backhaus. Many Heuermann people lived in bakehouses and
any other type of building which had a roof on it.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all!

Hans:

Good work! It must be the bakery as there were other bakers in the "family".
How did "Cheeks" get in there? Any ideas? Thanks again for your help and
hope you are having a Merry Christmas!

Gary

Werner:

Thanks much. You and Hans were "right on" this one. Have a Merry Christmas.
