The Low German terms Brinklieger, Brinksitzer and Brinkmann all appear to
mean essentially the same thing and describe a Häusler (a cottager or landless
farmer) who resides in a rented house typically located on a grassy embankment
(= Brink, Rain, Anger, Aue) dividing farm fields.
This according to my 1896 vintage German dictionary which has the following
definition under "Brink, m., -(e)s, M. -e, niederd., " (in case another lister
wants to take a crack at translating):
"Brinklieger = ein Häusler der in einem gemieteten Hause wohnt weil
dergleichen Häuser gewöhnlich auf einem Brinke gebaut sind (Brinksitzer, Brinkmann,
Angerhäusler)."
