Translation/explanation please

Hello,

I was reading through death records of Quakenbruck and came across the following. I wondered if anyone could translate and then perhaps explain what the following means. This is from records dated 1677.

"viele Jahre Senator und Senior der Sechzahner."

Hello Joel,

here is the translation

"senator for many years and oldest of the guild representatives"

Sechzehner (not Sechzahner) are 16 men representing/voting on behalf of the
guilds as part of the local council
