I am trying to trace my Tranel family line back to the Hannover region. Very little is known about this family, other than the arrived in Menominnee, Jo Daviess County, Il. between 1850 and 1860. My direct ancestors are John Bernard Tranel and his wife, Mary. Could anyone please help me? Thank You.
Sincerely,

I did see a bunch of Illinois Tranel's including your John and Mary
listed in the LDS site. Have you been able to find their ship's
passage? Have you tried the RootsWeb surname boards?
Geogen ( http://christoph.stoepel.net/geogen/v3/ ) shows the Tranel name only in Emsland county on the border to Netherland (catholic area).
The emigration book of the former "Kreis Lingen" - now "Kreis Emsland" listed some Tranel's, maybe this records interesting for you:
- Johann Bernard Tranel from Bawinkel, emigrated 1844, source church documents of parish Lingen
- Anna Margaretha Tranel, nee Claes, born 29.Aug.1829 Altenlingen, parish Lingen,
died 4.Jun.1897 in Menominee, IL,
married 12.Apr.1853 in Sinsinawa to Johann Henrich Tranel, emigrated to Galena.
Parents: Colon (farmer) Hermann Bernard Claes and Anna Adelheid Herbers
There is also listed the family
Johann Henrich Albert Tranel, born about 1815 in Plankorth, parish Bawinkel
and Anna Maria, nee Schmackers, with two children,
emigrated 1851 via New Orleans to the States.
The church records of the parishes Lingen and Bawinkel you should find by the next LDS office,
check www.familysearch.org
Good luck,

PS: three weeks ago I was in Dubuque and visited the Arnie Honkamp family
There is author of extensive website of Lower Saxony/Hanover/Netherland/Holland migration to the midwest. The surname TRANEL you will find included on her site:
Growing up ...one of moms friends had daughters Cindy & Vickie?? (I think)..and two sons..Joey & ???Davy??? forget exactly. The last name was either Tranel or Tramel... Cutest kids I ever saw..and sweetest kids I remember and among first few children I looked after.
The site - Emslanders.com lists some Tranels from Schepsdorf. They
lived in Menominee as did your John Bernard did.
Schepsdorf (which is near Lingen)is shown as the birthplace of other
Tranels on the Emslanders.com website. The Tenfelde book covers the COUNTY
of Lingen and maybe Schepsdorf would also be listed. Maybe not.
You could also look at the microfilm for Schepsdorf-Lohne which the LDS
holds. They are Catholic records.
On the other hand, you could look for records from Bawinkle where more
Tranel came from. They are also Catholic records. Some of the Tranels listed
on the Emslanders site are also from the area of Bawinkle.
I have a feeling that you have already done this research. I remember you
had written to the list some time back. These dead ends are the hardest
things to get past!
If you would want to pay some money for the Catholic records, there is
the town of Meppen You may find what you are looking for there. The cost is
16 Euros per hour. But these people are experts in the area and they may
find your John Bernard in no time. They also know English fairly well.
