Can anyone tell me if there is a town called Zella in the kingdom of
Hannover? Recently, I found some old church records in Southern Indiana. A
baptismal record indicates the parent is from Zella, Hannover. I have noted
there is more than one Zella in Germany, but I couldn't find Zella in
Neidersachen.
Beverlee Stuart-Borok
The spelling should be Celle.
Hi Beverlee,
this sounds like Celle which is about 32 kilometers northeast of Hannover.

Many places are spelled phonetically over here. The person who knew them may
have been illiterate and simply mentioned the name to someone else. This place is
probably Celle.

Dear Beverlee,
Zella should be Celle, which was also spelled Zelle around 1800. Celle is
quite important. It is a Kreisstadt (= County Capital) in Niedersachsen, has
a Oberlandesgericht and a famous prison. And a nice downtown area, too.
Regards, Helmut.
