Need some help and information. In December I was lucky enough to locate my
great-grandfather's (LOUIS GEISTERT, died October 15, 1882 in Rudzinitz, now
Rudziniec) death certificate at Standesamt I in Berlin (with help from a
Geistert in Germany, who wrote in German to Standesamt I for me). I found
out he was born in the Town of Koitz, District of Liegnitz (now Kawice,
Legnica). His death certificate said he was 55 years old when he died in
1882. That would indicate he was born in 1827 and his religion was
evangelical (Lutheran). Could anyone help me with information about the
town of Kawice and where the records for the year 1827 might be? Does
Standesamt I have records this early? Would the evangelical (Lutheran )
church be a logical place to start? Was/Is there an evangelical church in
this town?
I have subscribed to the Schlesien-l list and now this list for several
years looking for names and towns I might recognize. Needless to say I do
not speak German so I am very much at a disadvantage. But I have met
several helpful individuals through this list over these last two years who
speak english.
