Thiemann family

Hi Ulrich -

Sorry to be so long in replying. We have been away. I do not have any
information on your Thiemann family but if I come across anything I will pass it
along to you.
Best wishes,
Don Knoepfel

Hi Don,
thanks for your answer. I have a new problem with the T(h)iemann family.
I recently found a letter written on May 25th 1867 in New Braunfels, Texas, by a Wilhelm Tiemann. It´s the first time that I came across this Wilhelm Tiemann. I don´t know what role he plays in my Tiemann family. He writes the letter to his uncle Theodor Tiemann, a forester in Heinade / vic Braunschweig.
He obviously is a teacher and teaches German children. He writes that a son was born to him May 13th 1867. That are the only information I have from the letter.
Do you have this Wilhelm Tiemann in your list or have any idea where I can find more information on him and his family? Are there information available on schools and teachers in New Braunfels?
Many thanks an best wishes
Ulrich Küster

Hello Ulrich,

On the LDS website (www.familysearch.org) you can find this William
Tieman and his family. That would be in the same area as New Braunsfel,
Texas. I would presume that his birthplace as Brunswick could very well be
Braunschweig - census taker perhaps didn't know the correct spelling.

If you scroll down, you will see the members of his family. The
columns do not line up well here. You can find the information on the LDS
site.

I'm sorry, but I neglected to tell you that the census information I

William Tiemann probably entered into the U.S. by way of New York City in
1857, about age 14. He is first known to have lived in Woodburn, Illinois.
At the outbreak of the Civil War, he joined the Union Army on August 20,
1861, at age 18. (His Civil War records spell his name as William Tieman.)
He re-enlisted on January 12, 1864 in Chicago. After the Civil War ended,
his company was sent to Texas. Ordered to New Braunfels, Texas, they
encamped there until being mustered out of service on December 8th, 1865.
His rank was 1st Sergeant. Mr. Tiemann learned to read and write English in
his spare time during the war. He later wrote a 16-page narrative of his
Civil War/military experiences. He stated in his narrative that he had no
relatives in the U.S. He did not mention being wounded, although he came
close to death due to typhoid fever early in the War and suffered heat
stroke in Texas. He served in the 59th Illinois Infantry, Company I. He
received a pension in later life until his death.
Mr. Tiemann's physical appearance at the time of re-enlistment, according to
the official paperwork, was: blue eyes, light hair, fair complexion, 5'5"
tall.
New Braunfels was established in 1845. Mr. Tiemann liked the growing German
town. Several members of the 59th Illinois Infantry, Co. I, soon married New
Braunfels ladies, as did Mr. Tiemann.
Mr. and Mrs. Tiemann lived in Comal County until September of 1867. Then,
they settled in Guadalupe County, Texas. He owned cattle. His cattle brand
was a champagne glass shape (registered in 1867) and cattle ear markings
were hearts (registered in 1871 in Guadalupe County). According to the 1870
and 1880 census, his occupation was teacher. He is listed as being a teacher
of the German Schumannsville school, and a trustee there from 1893-1898,
according to school records*. He is also listed as one of the six original
trustees (another being Joseph Hierholzer) of the first "Zions Kirche" or
Zions Church in the German community of Bracken, the church being
established in 1871, according to the church's records. Between 1882-1898,
all of William and Elenora Tiemann's children went to confirmation class at
the First Protestant Church in New Braunfels. He was a church council member
there from 1893-1894.
In 1907, William purchased 200 acres of farm land, just outside of Karnes
City, on the Lenz Road, for the amount of $5600. Most, if not all, of their
children moved to the same area. William farmed there, and he and Elenora
spent the rest of their lives on that land. Both are buried in the New
Bremen Cemetery, along with some of their children.

*The Handbook of Texas Online": Guadalupe County, lists one of the county's
early schools as the Tiemann School.

Hello Barbara,

thank you very much for all your three super fast answers and your great help. I have now a completly new branch of my Tiemann family which was unknown to me up to now. I hope I can find the parents of William Tiemann and can connect him to the family.

Thank you and best whishes
Ulrich

Ulrich,
Have you ever found your Tiemanns in the Osnabrück emigration archives?
There are several listed there.
