I've stumbled on something in the 1920 United States Census, that might be the break I need. I'm looking for the parents and siblings of my great-grandfather, a Christian Schwimmer, born March 31, 1852. I found his daughter in the above census, and in the column where it states " Place of Birth of Father" the census taker noted, " Wittenberg, Germany". I'd like to request some birth certificates, but I am totally unfamiliar with the way Germany records its vital statistics. Is there someone out there, with the knowledge of whom to write, the address, and the fee? I've been searching for this information for over three years, and I would greatly appreciate any help. There is a town Wittenberg in the former dukedom of Sachsen-Wittenberg. Today it
is the town "Lutherstadt Wittenberg" in Sachsen-Anhalt.
And there is another Wittenberg, part of Martensrade in Schleswig-Holstein.
