Do you know if the Public Library of Cincinnati has preserved old copies of
19th century German-American newspapers?

I have been searching for newspapers published in Memphis, TN (my home
town) for a rather large German community in the city at the end of the
19th
century. The Memphis-Shelby Co. Library gave me a list of these G.A.
newspapers, copied from the book by Carl Arndt and May Olson,
"German-American Newspapers and Periodicals." In particular, I have been
searching for "Deutsche Zeitung" published in Memphis by Louis G. Fritz
because he was a friend of my grandfather. The catch is that it seems no
copies of these old newspapers have been preserved, not even in the US
Newspaper Project at the University of Tennessee.

I located a copy of Dr. Arndt's book, and learned that "Deutsche Zeitung"
was part of his private collection of German newspapers which he donated to
the American Antiquarian Society in Worchester, MA. This society tells me
that they do not have Dr. Arndt's collection, because they only accept
newspapers dated before 1876. What has become of this collection? The
college in Worchester where Dr. Arndt was head of the German Department in
the 1960s does not have his newspaper collection.

I would appreciate hearing from anyone with information about collections
of
19th century German-American newspapers.

Thanks for listening to this long story,
Cora

Hello Cora,

Yes, Cincinnati's Library does have 19th century German newspapers, but I
don't think that they have the Memphis paper you mentioned. I have only seen
Cincinnati based German papers. I also checked the library catalog, and
Deutsche Zeitung was not listed, but in the notes to some of the Cincinnati
based German newspapers that were microfilmed, I noticed that they were
microfilmed by the Library of Congress Photoduplication Service. You may try
them to see if they have your newspaper.

If anyone else is interested, I think that a lot of the microfilm reels of
the Cincinnati German newspapers are available for purchase through the Ohio
Historical Society (but not the Cincinnati Volksfreund).

Good luck,

Don
