I have to share my success story that happened within a day or so of my posting at the new forum.! Ursula, who I think has helped me more than once in the past on this same family, was able to find my family on a ship list, and to give me another surname in the family.

I could not find my Augusta Schwertfeger traveling on a ship with her small daughter, and had recently found Augusta's father -- who was Carl Schwertfeger. I puzzled over why they had the same name, and got some help on that that made sense. I had also found a marriage record for the daughter, Matilda, that fit in all respects except for her surname--she was using "Ebbinghouse", but the place, the date, the groom, all else fit. I wondered if she had reverted to her legal birthname for this legal process, rather than her adoptive name of Groppe. And if so, what did that tell me about Augusta (who had used the name Schwertfeger when she married John Groppe).

Ursula was able to find this information for me:
Ship "Johann Kepler" departed from Bremen and arrived in NY 28 October 1865.
On board were the following passengers:

SCHWERTFEGER, Carl, age 63, Baker, from Sievershausen;
EBBEGHAUSEN, Auguste, age 26, from Sievershausen;
EBBEGHAUSEN, Mathilde, age 10 months, from Sievershausen.

THANK YOU, URSULA and WOLF!! Wolf just knocks himself out trying to help us; you are so generous with your time and talents, Wolf.

So post your information there, folks, you never know who will come up with an answer to your question.

And now, of course, I must ask about the Ebbeghausens!

This Auguste EBBEGHAUSEN is listed as a male in the Castle Garden Garden
data base.
He did arrive on the same ship and date as Carl SCHWERTFEGER. You will
have to look at the ship manifest to see if the transcription was wrong
in the sex and in the surname.

I cannot find

Have you found these people in the 1880 Census? I cannot find a Matilda
Groppe or Carl SCHWERTFEGER or a John Groppe with a wife's name like Matilda.

The Castle Garden data base has the surname spelled EBBEGHAUSEN.
