Located around West Point, Iowa,USA. That is located in SE Iowa, north of Fort Madison.. any help would be appreciated

James,
I suspect William Tottenhoff and Anna immigrated ca 1868 or 1869 and were
missed in the 1870 Census. I found them in 1880 but couldn't locate them in
1870 or 1900. It is not unlikely that they died between 1880 & 1900.
However, I was able to find their eldest son, Herman, in Fort Madison, Iowa,
in 1910 & 1920. He married Anna ?? ca 1888 when he was 19 years old (she was
17). Both were born in Iowa. The 1910 Census shows both sets of parents
born in Germany. In 1910 Herman shows both parents born in Hannover.
Herman and Anna had 5 children; 4 daughters and a son. Herman worked as a
blacksmith for the railroad. Oh yes, his name was misspelled as "Tultenhoff"
in the 1910 Census. I didn't try to follow up with William & Anna's daughters
since I assume they were married by 1900 or so.
Source of information was Ancestry.Com Census Records.
Good luck.

thank you, for the information. jay.
Hi Jay,
There's an Adelheid Totenhof in 1870 census, age 40 from Prussia with
Louis (age 14 or 19) and Peter, age 10 in St Louis MO.
And...
I have looked for your Tottenhoff many times with no success. However,
today I tried a search on the Hannover Archives and found reference to some
people with the name of Totenhof in Apelern-Lauenau. Those towns are west
and a little southwest of the city of Hannover. There are other listings
with the Totenhof name in the Archives. You can order records from there,
but maybe there may be enough information there already. I don't know. At
least there are some names of towns that your people may have come from.
So, go to http://aidaonline.niedersachsen.de/ put the name of Totenhof in
the box. You will get 17 returns with that name. There is a lot of mention
of Bückeburg also. That is also in the same area. Note that you can get 3
sets of listings.
You'll get lots of returns on Google with the name of Totenhof. It is
indeed true that there were often variations of the spelling of surnames.
Good luck,
Barbara
