Thank you very much Hans. Was it common to have that many people in a residence? Is the place you found this information available to me?
Hallo Terry,
The source of the information ist the "Gemeindelexikon für das Königreich
Preußen" as of 01.12. 1905, Part I "Gemeindelexikon für die Provinz
Ostpreußen", printed Berlin 1908, reprinted Hamburg 2003 by the "Verein für
Familienforschung in Ost-und Westpreußen". May be you find this book in
larger libraries.
Suplitten was a "Gutsbezirk", an area that belonged to a "Landgut". May be
my translation as "estate" was not fully correct, as well as "residential
building" for "Wohnhaus". You have to understand, that in these four houses
there lived the people working as farm-laborers and inhouse for the
"Gutsherrn" with their families. The housing-standard was very poor for
these people those days. They might have had two rooms and a kitchen for
their whole family, no fluent water and toilet, often the floor was of
stamped loam, there were no floorboards.
Best wishes
Hans-Christoph Surkau
