Subject: Brick wall

Hi, Ed,
I did a quick search for Nohearn on www.castlegarden.org and got no hits.
Either he didn't enter the US at New York, or the records are just missing -
no bets either way. Or perhaps his name was misspelled - try some variants
and maybe he'll pop up. If you live close enough to a library that has a
copy of "Germans to America" (a multi-volume compilation of immigration
records edited by Glazier and Filby) you may be able to identify a date of
arrival and ship. GTA gets mixed reviews for accuracy, but it's a resource
you can't afford to ignore. A ship name and arrival date in turn would let
you look up a passenger manifest (usually available on microfilm from an LDS
Family History Center). The manifest, while interesting, may not be a very
big help; quite often the place of origin is simply listed as "Germany" or
"Bavaria" or wherever, but you might get lucky. If Ignatus left from
Hamburg, many emigration records are available on line. The other big port
of embarkation was Bremen, but unfortunately many of their older records
were destroyed about 1912 or so.
Hanover in 1847 was a fairly big place - the fourth-largest kingdom in
Germany at the time (I think), so you have quite a big area to cover in the
Old Country. It'd be nice to narrow it down a little more. Good luck!'

Hi Art & Ed,

The last I heard the www.castlegarden.org was not complete. It was & I
think
still is a work in progress. It would probably pay to go back occasionally
to
check again.
