--I have just received information that my ggrandfather was a steinmetz - I
looked that up and it said a stonecutter. Can anyone tell me what exactly
they did, or is it just like it sounds - cuts stone?
Thanks for any information.

You have it right. Just think of all the cobblestones on the old city
streets. They all had to be cut. Then there were lots of buildings,
bidges etc made from natural stone. It was hard work but they
made a living.

Hi Fred Walktalk and All,
Don't forget that a stone can be anything from a rock on a MI to a precious
stone as in diamond!!

That's right but a Steinmetz is never a diamond cutter. He simple
cuts more normal and non-jewelled stones.
