Could someone help me to determine where to write to find out some
information about an ancestor who came from a town called Elsfleth. I have never done
this before and really don't know what to do.
I am specifically looking for a marriage record for a couple and for any
children they had in Germany before leaving.
Johann Heinrich Stege, born 13 Oct 1817, Elsfleth, and Catherine B. (Unknown
maiden name).
The children that I know were born in Germany were:
Carl Heinrich Stege, born 23 Nov 1841
Elise M. Wilhelmina Ch. Ernastina Stege, born 4 May 1842
Diedrich Stege, born 1846/1847
They were gone from Germany by 30 May of 1848.

You could ask the expert for the church records of Elsfleth. Look here:
http://www.genealogienetz.de/vereine/OGF/index.html
Then "Kirchspielverzeichnis" at the left side. . Scroll down to Elsfleth and write him a mail.

Hi,
I searched the church records for Elsfleth today, and I found Johann Hinrich's birth on Oct. 13, 1817, his parents were Hinrich Stege, Tagelöhner in Deichstücken and Anna Margarte Magdalene, née Haaselmann.
I also found the three children you mention:
- Carl Johann Heinrich Stege, * Nov. 23, 1841
- Elise Margarete Wilhelmine Christine Stege, * May 4, 1843 (not 1842 !)
- Johann Diederich anton Carl Stege, * April 28, 1847
These 3 children are with his wife:
Catharine Bridgett, née Lawrence, obviously an English name.
I could not find a marriage, neither for Johann and Catharine nor for any possible first marriage, they must have married somewhere else.
The name Stege is quite common in Elsfleth.
