SS und Eisernes Kreuz (SS and iron cross medals)

Hallo Klaus,

Vielen Dank fuer Deine schnelle Antwort. Bin begeistert ueber die Email vom
Frank Scarbarth, die Du kopiertest. Ich werde mich mit dem Bundesarchiv in
Berlin in Verbindung setzen. Muss allerdings erst noch ein bischen Detektiv
spielen... weiss nur, dass er mit Emil unterschrieben hat und anscheinend
ein Neffer der Schwester meiner Grossmutter war. Muss also herauskriegen,

besuchen....

Bis spaeter

Erika

For the english speaking list members:

I wanted to know where I can get information about members of the SS. Klaus
kindly sent a previous message and the gist of it is:

If your ancestor was a member of the SS (or other Nazi group), get in touch
with:

Bundesarchiv
R 2
Finckensteinallee 63
12205 Berlin.
Tel.: (0 18 88) 77 70-0

This is the place where they keep the documents of the 'Third Reich' (i.e.
Nazi Germany).

You can either check the documents out yourself, or you can write to them
and they will send replies with copies of the relevant documents (it'll cost
something, though). They need a copy of your passport, reasons for request
outlined (e.g. family research) and as much details about the person you
want to check out. If it is about a deceased family member, it is
recommended to send a copy of the death certificate, otherwise they'll need
permission of either the person researched or their descendents. It'll take
approx. 4-6 weeks.

For information relating to other information about the German Army of that
time (i.e. where soldiers were placed, rank, etc.) write to:

Deutsche Dienststelle
Eichborndamm 179
13403 Berlin
Tel.: (0 30) 41 90 40
Fax: (0 30) 41 90 41 00
Homepage: http://dd-wast.de
e-mail: webmaster(a)dd-wast.de

This office (WASt = Wehrmachtsauskunftsstelle) holds notes about who was
informed when soldiers died on duty.

Bundesarchiv -Militrarchiv
Postfach
Freiburg im Breisgau
Tel.: (07 61) 4 78 17-0
Fax: (07 61) 4 78 17-81

The family researcher, who send the original email in 2003 mentioned that it
took him a few months to get everything, but that he was impressed with the
results and got far more details and photos than he had anticipated. So it's
well worth trying.
