I am researching a family line that comes from Germany/Prussia. Most every
record I have simply states one or the other. The single exceptions are
two naturalization records for two members of the family. One listed a
location of Coblenz and the other listed a location of Kreuznach.
So far, so good. However, today I cam across a birth certificate for a
child born here in America in 1871. The certificate says that her father
was born in "Spa brugge, Germany" in 1837.
I have read that the word "Spa" was used to identify localities that had
canals running through them - if I am to assume that the 'brugge' is
actually Brugge, Belgium, and not Brugge, Germany, this would make sense,
as Brugge is known as "Venice of the North" because of the city's vast
canal system.
I also know this family emigrated to America from Antwerp in the 1847.
Here's the questions: Has anyone ever heard of a "Spa Brugge, Germany"?
If so, where is it? If not, can anyone come up with a similar sounding
name that is in the vicinity of Coblenz or Kreuznach?
I'm having a hard time figuring out how my Prussian family (that I believe
is from the Coblenz area, and had 10 children) has a son born in Brugge,
Belgium and then leaves from Antwerp 10 years later...I haven't researched
the church records in the Brugge area yet - I would appreciate any comments
from the list.
Thanks,
Joe

Hello Joseph,
Don't wether this is of any help, but besideds Brugge there is also a place called Spa in Belgium (in the Ardennen).
It is renowed for its mineralwater (Spa is also a trademark).

That place does exist: postcode 55595 Spabrcken, it is situated about 20km
nortwestwest of Bad Kreuznach. Greetings Hans Peter Albers
I have a person I have been searching in the Rheinland whose records say
from "Spabeck" Still have not found any such location.
I was told that some of these locations instead of being cities could be
like a Gut or a Hof and may no longer exist.... and yet, there has to be a
baptismal record somewhere?! If it was a Gut or Hof it would be in a nearby
parish; but where?
