Hello All,
I have an ancestor Sebastian Riedel who came to
America on the ship "Bera" out of Bremen and into
Cincinnati in 1854. His parents were Robert and Anna.
His naturalization papers list his German home as
Streitau, Oberfranken, Bayern. Now, I can find the
town, it is now part of Gefrees, but my question is,
where do I go from here? I am helping my mother who is
computer-challenged, and I don't know all that much
about tracking down ancestors. Any help would be
appreciated.
Thanks
Pam Christensen
You're probably working with St George parish. See:
http://www.compuwolf.de/streitau.htm
Your first step was to ask here - which is good. Now you have to see
if the Mormons have any records from that church. Go to
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/FHLC/frameset_fhlc.asp
A search there will give you several Steinau places. I dodn't have a
map here on the road but you should be able to find the one you're
looking for. But then none of them seem to be in Bavaria and the LDS
may be no help.
If necessary you have to write to the church preferably in German.
You can write your letter in English and then have it translated for
you on the German genealogy site: www.genealogy.net
Best of luck
