I am searching for my grandfather's family members. He was Leopold Czanera
born in (or near) Paprotken, Landkreis Lötzen East Prussia (now in Poland)
May 6, 1880. (A very small village just south of Lötzen renamed Goldensee
in 1938.) He served in the German army probably in the early 1900s. He
emigrated to America, traveling on the ship Cassel and arriving in Baltimore
April 26th 1907. He changed his name to Sanera on arriving in America.
I have no knowledge of his mother, father, brothers or sisters or what
happened to the family after WWII. I am hoping that someone on the list
will have information about this family.

you should ask the resp. states archive in Poland for the birth certificate. On this document you will find names of the parents.
Paprodtken belonged to the civil registry office in Rydzewen. According to the PRADZIAD database of the Polish states archives, the birth certificates of the civil registry office in Rydzewen for the year 1880 still exist in the state archive in Lyck (poln.: Ełk).

Usually, you can write in English to Polish states archives, but writing in Polish accelerates the processing of your request.
This is fantastic. I assumed that the records would be in Lötzen, but I
will follow up your excellent lead.
I will let you know what happens.
Thanks,
Michael
