Dear Barbie-Lew,
the translation is already very good, when even not perfect. Some better translations I would suppose:
- driving race = Fährtraße is not correct, it´s a name of its own as all streetnameswhich follow, the sense should be street to the ferry.
- "16 Wohn- und Wirtschaftsgebäude", living house should be okay, "Wirtschaftsgebäude" = "Restaurant" is wrong, the sense should be more in sense of barns, workshop, farm buildings. the typical house with Reet wre farmbuildings, where living and work was combined under one roof, at least when rurale and peasant work made the living. It is doubtful if there was a restaurant at all among the burned buildings. The typical house with a roof of Reet was at itself already, what one would call a "Wohn- und Wirtschaftsgebäude"
The other point is difficult to say, if this burnings were the reason of emmigration. Other things happenend too at this time in Geesthacht. I would have come to this soon, but decided because of Christmas to send the next years of the "Schwarze Chronik" because of its dark moods later. Concerning Geesthacht the chronicle reports:
- 30.9.28 Schwere Straßenschlachten in Geesthacht zwischen Kommunisten und Reichsbanner transl.: heavy street battles in Geesthacht between communists and more right socialdemocrat "Reichsbanner" people). The Geesthacht site, you mentioned reports 2 death people by that. A month ago 17.8.1928 the same happened bloodily already in Hamburg, at a place called Vogelweide. Background of that always the same, abortage of work, which was in geesthach very high because of the forbidden military productions after WW I. See Dynamite-factories of Alfred nobel and successors nearby on that same site
So there were also other things in the air which made life increasngly uncomfortable and drove clearsighted men out of the country. If your people were ruined by the fire, which was occording to the history an accident, which by the way happened not to seldom in connection with the old Reet roofed houses, because of hope of later heritage or else, that might of course have een an additional reason.
By the way I checked the chronicle also for the name HOLERT, no hit at all.,Tthe name is today known in the region as a cartirebusiness with lots of workshops in the region in and around Hamburg. How close the relationship was between the "Holert´sche haus", which could also be only the traditioned name for the building and not the name of the actual (1928) inhabitants, is difficult to say without deeper local researches. There are today (1998) 19 different HOLERT entries only in Geesthacht. If you count that back, there will not been much less HOLERT there in 1928.
by the way my congratulations for being back the one generation more.
I studied also a bit the very excellent Geesthacht web-site. Found for your HOLERT two interesting mentionings, tjere was a painter Hans HOLERT, who worked on the town heraldic figure and actual among the KulLturauschuß there is a picture of a group and amongst a Carmen HOLERT. The latter one seems to be interested in cultural things, what is a good proposition to ask for genealogical interset and maybe help, with your new HOLERT-wing. Perhaps she or the STADTARCHIV man, Boehart, may help with the marriage document HOLErT/SCHMIDT
Greetings and best wishes
Hans Peter Albers, Bienenbüttel
