I have been told my great grandmother's children were born in Schonebecke
very near Dortmund 1898 to 1900. I am being told there is no Schonebecke
near Dortmund. I can not find it on the internet. Does anyone know if
there was a small village called
Schonesbecke near there at that time? Thank you.
Hi Jan
there is a Schönebeck as part of Essen
about 40 kilometers west of Dortmund.

Hello Jan,
beside Schönebeck is Schonnebeck another part of Essen.
Please tell us more about the persons you research.
Many greetings

Thank you all who answered my response. I learned something new about
Schonebecke this morning. I contacted a large genealogical library near to
me. They found a Schonebecke in an old gazeteer. They found several with
similar spellings, but this one was the only one spelled with an e on the
end. It was within about 10 miles of Dortmund and only contained 2
houses. I am fairly confident this is the one that I was looking for.
However now that I have that information I'm not sure what to do with it.
I am thinking the records would have probably been combined with Dortmund.
I am trying to locate the birth place of my great grandmother Fredricka
Schafer. She was born in Germany in 1878/1879. She was married there and
had 3 children by her first husband before they immigrated to the USA.
These children always said they had been born in Dortmund. However I found
a United States naturalization record that says they were born in
Schonebecke. My greatgrandmother was listed as being born in Graffer.
Nobody seems to know where that is. My grandmother Fredricka was a
registered midwife in Germany. In my research on Dortmund I found there
was a well known school of midwifery there. Therefore I believe that she
went to school in Dortmund and probably married near there and her children
were born near enough to consider Dortmund their birthplace. I am not sure
about her husband's name. Possibly Frank Prinz. He was abusive and
shortly after they arrived in America, she obtained a divorce. She later
married my great grandfather and the children took his name. I am hoping
if I can locate the birth records of the children it will give me some
information on her birthplace. If anyone has any suggestions I would
appreciate it.
Thank you!
Jan
Hello Birgit. Thank you for your kind offer to help. I am not familiar
with German geography, or record keeping methods. And I do not speak
German. This makes my search very difficult. If you have any suggestions
for me I would appreciate it. I do need help, but I'm not sure where to go
with this next!

Hallo zusammen,
Christian (Gdde)
