Schmidt - probobly not the right list

Dear Hans,

Might there be old city directories for German cities? Kind of like phone books which list names and occupations/address of people living in the community?

There were books published in St. Louis which listed the above info as well as reverse lookups if one is looking for just an address.

Also was wondering if perhaps one of the local libraries might have have online index's of obituaries, or genealogical interest perhaps?

Like St. Louis Library's online index of obituarys published in the St. Louis Post Dispatch for the years.. 1880 thru 1920 and also 1942 thru 1945, as well as recent 1992-2002.

Yes, they do exist in form of the Adressbcher. In Hamburg for example ince 1822,
but unfortunately not online readable. You will find them in the Staatsarchive
and other libraries. Bergedorf as a part of Hamburg will be in there. The
Genealogical Society of Hamburg has editions for different years. That is where I
could look for you in the first week of july.
