Can anyone explain to me what Schlag u. Dumpf means when used as cause of death? My handy German-English dictionary gives a literal translation of the words as Shock and Gloom.
Thank you.

I think Schlag would be stroke or apoplexy. Not sure abut Dumpf?
Schlag usually refers to a stroke and Dumpf means suffocation. Not sure how
they fit together.

Hello Joel,
in german I know the meaning of this words in cause of dead. It could be a violent death.
Schlag = hit, stroke, impact
dumpf = thud, dull
"Dumpfer Schlag" means that there was an impact with a hammer for example.
Have a look at http://dict.leo.org
This is a translation site - I believe you can find the right meaning and translation.
I hope this was helpful.

See http://www.andreas-karstens.de/Krankheiten/krankheiten.htm for definitions of old German medical terms. Dumpf used to mean asthma. Schlag meant a lung weakness, which makes sense with asthma.
Stroke used to be called Schlagfluss, or today, Schlaganfall. I haven't heard a stroke called a Schlag in modern or old usage. In old church records I've only ever seen Schlagfluss.
