Hello,
I'm looking for more information on the (once worldwide known) Elbing-based company Schickau GMBH,
manufacturer of steamengines and locomotives. I'm am particularly interested in lists of former employees,
for the following reason:
My greatgreatgrandfather Emil Franz Kretschmann, born in Elbing in 1856, emigrated to the Netherlands
somewhere in the 1870's. The reason for this emigration is still unclear to me, however I do know that he started
working for a steelworks company in Amsterdam. Since this branche is in line with the Schickau company, I'm inclined
to think that my gggfather worked for Schickau (who was an employer for a lot of men living in and around Elbing in those days), before he went to the Netherlands.
It could have been that he took an apprenticeship at Schickau, for some or another reason could not stay there and decided to try his luck abroad (in this case Amsterdam).
Another possibility is that he was employed at Schickau and the company at a certain time decided to send him to Amsterdam to work for what may have been an annex(-factury) of Schickau.
So, in short I have the folliwing questions:
1. Where can I find more information on (the history of) Schicaku GMBH?
2. Are there lists of former employees of this company?
3. Did Schickau GMBH also have facturies in other parts of the world, i.e. Amsterdam?
Thanks in advance for your reply,
Milko Kretschmann.
