Is Schellhammer a common name in Niedersachen? In 1870 August Shellhammer lived in Illinois (USA) and was 35 years old (born about 1835). Later he in 1900 he said he was born April 1839. In a marriage record he stated his mother was born a Siemers. I would like to know where he was from. We believe he came to the USA in about 1865.

Hello Mr. Underwood,

I surely don't have a statistic, but I come from Hamburg, which is next to
Niedersachsen, and I know several Schellhammer's.
So I mean it is not as common as e.g. Smith, but nevertheless not a rare
name.
