Schäferei, Gorken West Prussia

Hi all -

Via the entry of "Gorken" www.meyersgaz.org will shed some light on the
subject.
The map shows a "Zgl." not far from Gorken and there is also a "Gut".

Bernd

Hello Ray,

I am you sure that there is a misunderstanding : "Ziegler" has nothing to do
with "Schäferei" (sheep-/goat-farming)? Not "Ziege" (Goat) is the
origin of the work title, but "Ziegel" (brick). A brick-maker was called
"Ziegler" Your ancestors worked in a brickyard.

"Schäferei" does not necessarily mean "sheepfarming" but is often also a
place-name, also in the district of Marienwerder:

May be it will be of help, to ask your question in the forum there:
Westpreußen Forum asking specifically for your ancestors
mentioned above and/or for a brickyard in Gorken

Hello Bernd,

"Zgl." supports my guess, it's the abbreviation used on maps for "Ziegelei"

brickyard.
