Schäferei, Gorken West Prussia

Hello, researchers,

Does anyone know anything about either of Schäferei or Gorken, West Prussia? I have found both in the vicinity of Marienwerder, which aligns with family tradition so far. My great-grandparents were married and lived and worked there in the 1850s and 1860s. My great-grandmother and other children were born there also. Wondering if there was a Gut in the vicinity or where would Carl work as a ziegler?

Hello Ray,

I am you sure that there is a misunderstanding : "Ziegler" has nothing to
do with "Schäferei" (sheep-/goat-farming)? Not "Ziege" (Goat) is the
origin of the work title, but "Ziegel" (brick). A brick-maker was called
"Ziegler" Your ancestors worked in a brickyard.

"Schäferei" does not necessarily mean "sheepfarming" but is often also a
place-name, also in the district of Marienwerder:

May be it will be of help, to ask your question in the forum there:

mentioned above and/or for a brickyard in Gorken
