RICHTER, PALM families near Celle

I am new to the list, and have enjoyed reading your archives. Sorry I don't read/write German, but I am trying to learn.

My grandfather, Otto Frederick RICHTER (born 16 August 1864), came to Memphis, TN about 1880 from ?, Prussia. In Memphis he lived with Gustavus Adolphus PALM (born 11 July 1839), who came from the same village as my grandfather. In the 1854 Hamburg Passenger Index I found G. A. PALM age 14 and C. H. PALM age 17 traveling together to New York City. Their birthplace is Celle, Province of Hannover. Their religion was either Lutheran or Calvinist. Family stories say that my RICHTER ancestors were "Junker." I know that Otto's older brother was a Hussar.

From queries on the PALM surname list I know that there were several PALM families living in Celle about 1840. Another query told of Oberatmann
Johann Phillip PALM at Ehrenburg in 1717. Does anyone know the location of Ehrenburg, or the meaning of Oberatumann? I will appreciate hearing from anyone searching for RICHTER or PALM.

Best wishes,
Cora

The term Junker was not really appropriate in Hannover. It's a real Prussian thing
and mostly refers to East Prussian nobility.

Oberamtmann is the word. An Amtmann is an official and an ober- is of a higher
level.

There is a Castle Ehrenburg in Coburg in Franconia, since 1920 in northern
Bavaria. This area belonged to the Wettin line of Dukes from the mid 14th century.
There could well have been an Oberamtmann Palm there.

To Jens Mueller, Koppe Historical Research Service:

Thank you for doing a free check (on 21 & 22 May) of the Hannover Census
1852 data base. I am glad to know that this census still exists.

Please check for Gustavus Adolphus PALM, and Gustav and August RICHTER.
They should be living in Kreis Celle.

Thank you again,
