Peg, I did a smattering of checking on your Kampermann's with little result this morning. I stopped by the public library only to find that there was a small but very spread-out meeting taking place in the room where most of the genealogy records are located.
The micro-reading area contains such things as census, newspapers, and city directories -- so I decided to check the directory as being the least available to you from another source, and selected 1889 as being close to the non-census of 1890. The directory that year covered the city, but also (some of?) the county. It was reverse film, and somewhat muddy. I looked for Alting, Camp/Kemp and Habben -- and found very little.
I found no listings for Alting which surprised me, since we currently have a member of the St.Legislature with that name, so I had just assumed that it would be a continuous family
Despite a reference to "see Kamp" under Camp - I found nothing under K.
As Camperman: a Miss Ida and John, a Fireman with Wabash Yards (I assume thats the RR...) both at the address of 43 18th St.
Listed in the county were a Johanna (possible Johanns ? LD - followed by some letters I could not read and "city"
He/she was followed by Randolph.
I found no Habben anywhere.
I do think it is possible that they did not do the entire county perhaps only the township containing the city, or the area of West Lafayette - the directories become much more thorough as the years passed.
Since the group meeting in the room showed no sign of finishing, I stopped at this point.
Have you looked at the TIPCOA website at rootweb? < www.rootsweb.com/~intcags> There are some links to other sites; some work has been done on restoration and photoing old cemeteries, but I didnt find it linked when I checked. We(TIPCOA) have records of most of the cemeteries. The county has filmed their marriage records - the original papers or books and other "discards" rescued by TIPCOA during the courthouse attic remodeling are in the custody of the Historical Society. One of those books appears to have been a misplaced death book for Tippecanoe County in 1898-9. Several years ago it had disappeared, but I had extracted it, and it does indeed list Edward Habben m.w. @66 laborer - native of Germany resident of Lafayette died 1898 Dec.30 - cause: Pneumonia/Heart (#286 p.29) The other names were not represented. (I also had indexed parents where given -but these were usually found only in entries for children or young marrieds.) TIPCOA has a copy of this book and other things which we had indexed and are now trying to recreate. I
will try to check at the County Library at my next trip to town and see what is now in their collection. There is also a library in West Lafayette and at Purdue - but they had little of local genealogy interest the last time I checked - which was some years back. Also I will see whether there is another web site -- with my problems learning to use a new computer and system, I have trouble accessing what I used to know. Right now I need to send this before the thunder gets louder!
Sorry it took so long to find so little - Barb Rice
