Re: Cemeteries -- we were interested in finding some ancestral graves in Holdorf. Same story as yours. Werner told us that in earlier days, the cemetery surrounded the Church. We have old pictures from a local book they published showing the stone wall that previously surrounded the Church and cemetery. The wall no longer exists and the graves are covered over with brick pavers. In the current cemetery, each family has a plot. Family members take care of it -- planting seasonal flowers, mulching it, etc. We took several pictures.
We were told if a family moves away or after about 60 years, the plot is turned over to someone else. We were just as surprised as they were when they came to the U.S. and visited some of our cemeteries.
