I am glad that my grandmother had children's books in the old German script and I learned to read from them and to pronounce the words. It made learning German in high school and college much easier. I really treasure those books
I am very far from fluent, but I can get the gist of most letters in German. Anyway, they are among my favorite posessions. My dad spoke German until he went to Kindergarten.
I am so pathetic on reseach though, I don't even know where my great-grandparents on my dad's side came from in Germany. The rest of the relatives from near Hanover.
Wow! Wish I could find a childrens book like that. I have so many lines in
Germany that I need to find some way of translating German words myself. As
of now I have approx. 24 pages, although they are not full pages, of
typewritten German. One is the History of Neuenkirchen & the other is the
History of the Christophus Church in Neuenkirchen. I know of several who
have volunteered to translate but I will not ask them to translate 24 pages.
I tried to use Babelfish & some other translation site but they come up with
words that don't make sense. I have a very small German dictionary but I
don't find most of the German words in it. It is mainly for a traveler
visiting the country just to get by. Please if anyone knows a good book for
learning German I am going to the Bookstore tomorrow & may be able to order
it. I don't think I am smart enough to take a German language course, but I
would like to be able to find the German word & have the translation in
English. If anyone knows of such a book, please let me know. Thanks.
