I am new to the list and I am hoping that there will be others researching
the same names. My Wilhelm Hartmann was born 29 Jan 1818 in the Hannover
area. I do not have an actual town name. He immigrated to New Orleans
possibly in the 1840's. His son Jacob Adolf Hartmann is listed as being
Catholic and a Dairyman. His son Henry Hartmann also became a dairyman.
Wilhelm Hartmann died in New Orleans 20 March 1895 and is buried in the
Carrollton Cemetery inNew Orleans.
Can you recommend a way to find Wilhelm Hartmann's town of birth?
Margaret
Hello Margaret,
I've spent some time looking for your people. Were they all Catholic?
Have you attempted to get marriage records, etc. from the diocese in New
Orleans? I have done a lot of research in the Hannover area for Catholics
and it is not easy!
I can't say that I have had any success searching. Just a couple
suggestions (which you may have already done):
Check this page which leads to many other links:
http://home.att.net/~wee-monster/neworleans.html
In addition, have you used the GenWeb for Louisiana:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/la/lasearch.htm
I found many items for Hartmann there--things you already have, like
the cemetery, short obit, some children born. Was William's wife named
Barbara Valette?
Also, if you do a search on the LDS site for Mitchell, you will find
that the German spellings for that name are much different. So, when you
are looking in early New Orleans records for Henry Mitchell, it may probably
be spelled another way--so try the alternative spellings. Same thing for
ship lists.
Good luck,
Barbara
