Re: Seedorf, Ellenberg -Gail Frein

I have had internet problems and wrote many letters, but they went to wherever they go when there is no transporting. So for that reason I think I may be brief. I think I may have mentioned it already that when my grandfather needed mony to buy a farm and get married and do all that about 1900 he was at Joliet, Illn. He worked the Gillispie coal mine. cole camp? It is near springfield also. Before coming to iowa our Seil family were there in will county. And another family of Dohrman settled there. His wife was Dorothy Seil They were supposed to be from Hamburg. also Anna Meyer married John Bennett. I believe he worked at coal mine and was also a banker. So they must have been in same area. and the Schrodeer family I am interested in stopped there too.
It is such a great spot. about 50 milse or so from st Louis. And not far from Iowa or Minn.
I know Mr. bock gave me the clipping thiking about the name grote.

As for Seedorf. I thought it was a Ellenberg that I had, but looking again what I had was Ellenmann. some of the Schultze and Behrens, had some connections in Ahnendorf but I do have a Anna Magareta Niebuhrs of the Neetzendorf area. I have not checked up on her, because i have no births etc. She was a sponser in 1772.
You probably know that by zumbroto are many Fries and Frey. Not sure about Freien. mower county and Freeborn was prety handy to be near Iowans.

I may be checking on Sommer and Gerhke.

Good luck.

Gutt,

It is certainly interesting---it looks like our Hannover families followed
about the same migration pattern once they immigrated. I had did not know
there was a coal mine there. Maybe what drew them to the area, to raise
money? Mine were there about two years. I know that there were Gehrke
families in Freeborn/Faribault Counties in Minnesota. Let me know if you
are looking for anything specific in those areas, and of course, we have
Meyers!
Meyers from Mansfield Lutheran Church records show Wippendorf and Sasendorf
as birthplaces, and Heinrich Friederick W. Warnke from Nahrendorf,
Hannover. Also there is Gerber, Schmidt, and Lemke from Wheatling,
Illinois; and Pfanning and Lembke from Naperville, Illinois.

The other information you sent---I am still going over it---but I am sure
that some of it pertains to my family lines in Hannover. I have a lot of
clues, just need to connect the dots.

You're right, my husband's family is from Mower County, and also Mitchell
County, Iowa.

Best regards,

Gail Frein

Hi Gail,

My guy was running from the Prussian draft and he only got as far as Jersey
City, NJ. I think his family were probably not farmers!

HINT: If you cannot find 'Wheatling' in Illinois, do try "Wheeling" which
is in Cook County and was settled by German Protestant farmers and is not
more than a day's ride by fast horse from Naperville.

Maureen

and they have an active historical society...

Who does? Jersey City? Or Wheeling?
Thanks,
Maureen
