Hallo Armin,
You have had another little helper here :-)) Did you know that you can search the 1880 census on www.familysearch.org and have thousands of results for all of America or just one state of America by not inserting a surname? This way you find entries where no surname has been typed because it must have been illegible. There are many results for "George" but there are less if you search for Jennie and give George as the head of the household - this method would have no results if Jennie died before 1880. I too could not see your family but possibly I missed seeing them. Maybe your family travelled back to Germany to visit family.

Dear Armin,
I have also tried to find your family on 1880 census without a result.
On the 1900 census I find:
Geroge b. Nov. 1847 (age is 52)
Jennie b. Nov. 1849??? (age is 51)
Seems like same data you found.
He is in Manhattan, on West Third it appears in 1900.
Have idea.
Perhaps there is a city directory for 1878-1880 for Manhattan. I would email libraries in New York, and ask if city directories are availiable for the period of 1880. IF you can find them in a directory perhaps search can be done for that exact district.
