Re: Researches at ancestry.com George Edward Hattorf

Hi Barbara

Yes thats the right one George Hattorf at ancestry.com you find him as

George E George 17 Mar 1911 Cypress Hills National Cemetery NY

He is born about 1845 in New York as son of Frederick A. Hattorf and Julia
Hattorf see 1850 census here you find the family under the wrong name Haltorf
his father was cigar dealer. The next hint is George Edward was in the Union
Army in 1862 (together with his brother Frederick J). He was mustered out on
September 1862 in Brooklyn NY. It looks like he has spent his whole life in
NY. (his father was fighting for the south)

And thats the biggest problem why cant i find him in the 1880 census? He
must be there.

Armin

Hello Armin,

I know it's frustrating, but census records are not complete. My
great-grandfather and family isn't in the 1860 census even though we know he
was in Iowa. He had a son there in August of 1860. The whole census was
checked by hand and he's not there. However, he did move to Nebraska some
time after that and we're not absolutely sure when.

And yes, the misspelling is a problem. Some census-takers did a poor
job of writing. Some script is hard to read.

Sorry,
Barbara

I suppose this message is not for me !
