RE: Re: Mecklenburg-L digest, Vol 1 #385 - 3 msgs

I can't answer your question completely but according to the History of
Mecklenburg at:
http://pages.prodigy.net/jhbowen/history.htm "In 1815, the dukes of
Mecklenburg were elevated to "Grand Dukes", and Mecklenburg became a Grand
Duchy."

You can find more information about the Royal families of
Mecklenburg-Schwerin and Mecklenburg-strelitz at:

http://www.btinternet.com/~allan_raymond/Mecklenburg_Strelitz_Royal_Family.h
tm
http://www.btinternet.com/~allan_raymond/Mecklenburg_Royal_Family.htm

You can also find more by going to www.google.com and entering: Grand Duke
Mecklenburg.

Hope this helps.

Hello David F. Thies
I am interested in your list of rulers listed below.
Did they have titles?
Were there rulers in this area prior to 1785?
Did these rulers also have jurisdiction over Mecklenburg-Strelitz?
I am interested because my earliest ancestor was found in the books of the
Alt Strelitz church. He was Joachim Ernst Schnell, born 1759 in Frstensee,
Mecklenburg-Strelitz. Or would it be more correct to write he was born in
Mecklenburg?
I have read Carol Gohsman Bowen's history article and am not sure of the
correct way to state his birth place.
Thank you for your reply.

Hi Roy,

maybe it will help a little bit: In 1701 the Mecklenburg area got a very
difficult political structure. In that year the Mecklenburg dukedom was
divided (like gouvernments) into two dukedom parts: Mecklenburg-Schwerin and
Mecklenburg-Strelitz. Until 1918 each of this parts every time has his own
regent, but both regents every time named "Duke of Mecklenburg, ...", after
1815 "Grandduke of Mecklenburg, ...". Both dukes had to work like political
twinks, like one body with two heads. So at dukes time Mecklenburg-Schwerin
and Mecklenburg-Strelitz never were separate states - only parts of the
Mecklenburg state. Most of the descriptions of that political situation at
MEC you will find are incorrect.

The village Frstensee you named belonged to the dukedom (better
dukedomspart or gouvernment) Mecklenburg-Strelitz. Alt-Strelitz - or
Strelitz (Alt) - was a little town at Mecklenburg-Strelitz near Frstensee.
In the 1920th Alt-Strelitz became a part of the town Neustrelitz.

Hello Peter:
Thank you very much for your answer to my questions. It is very much
appreciated.

Hello Arnold V. Weirmeir;
I sent a reply to you on your list of Mecklenburg-Schwerin rulers.
However I mistakenly addressed the message to David Thies.
I am truly sorry for this mistake and do apologize.
