Re: Mecklenburg-L digest, Vol 1 #385 - 3 msgs

Hi List Holders,

I am doing KROHN family name. I found the US declaration of intention paper
for my ancestor CHRISTIAN KROHN born Mecklenberg Germany 1846. He signed it
1869 and stated that he renounced the Emperor of Mecklenberg. Another
relative also from Mecklenberg signed a US declaration of intention and
stated he renounced the Duke of Mecklenberg........
    QUESTION to the list
Would that be the same person? An Emperor and a Duke?
Connie Krohn

Hi Conny,
this is somewhat a funny question: There never was an Emperor of M. but
there was a Duke (at the time you mention a Grandduke) of M. It also could
not be a misspelling, meaning the Emperor of Germany, as this position
became obsolete earlier in the Napoleonic wars. The former Emperor was a
member of the Hapsburg family (Austria), not of the (Grand)Dukes of
Mecklenburg family.
Phaps there was lack in the knowledge of the different degrees of blue
blooded, mixing up kings, dukes, emperors, granddukes ...
Wolfgang
